Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding your horse, any questions, concerns or information you are seeking. If I do not pick up, please leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
Dr. Karen Hassan
I travel to Loomis, California for part of the month to see lamenesses and perform elective and emergency surgeries. I cannot wait until I am fully set up to all that I can do, surgically speaking, here!
I grew up in south suburban Boston riding and driving a Shetland pony and jumping my reining horse. We did a little reining and western pleasure too!
I received my Bachelors of Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1994. I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis in 1998 and I went on to complete a Large Animal Surgery and Lameness Internship at Tufts University in Massachusetts. I returned to UC Davis for my Equine Lameness and Surgery residency.
My husband, Michael Dearmin, and I met the second year of my residency. I lived in Georgia for three years while Mike completed his surgical residency. We moved to this area to be closer to family. Mike is a small animal surgeon working at Sierra Veterinary Specialists in Carson City. We have two little boys, Donovan and Tyler, now five and three years old. We have two horses, two dogs and a cat. I love riding (jumping, dressage and trail), running, practicing yoga and reading. These days my time is spent caring for the two and four leggeds in my household when I am not working.
I was exposed to acupuncture early on in my career and learned how to “needle”, but I was just following a recipe. Once we got reasonably settled here in Jacks Valley I enrolled in the International Veterinary Society’s Acupuncture course and certification program. I wanted to be able to do more and understand the philosophy. I learn more everyday!
I started Eastern Sierra Equine so I could practice a blend of Eastern and Western therapies concentrating on performance and sport horses.
To become certified I had to treat dogs and cats as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed the addition of these lovely multiple-toed creatures to my practice. I do require that all small animal cases I see are referred by a small animal veterinarian. If you encounter reluctance from your regular veterinarian, please let me know.
